June 11: From Hot Springs to Little Rock
Our computer has been down since Friday and gosh, do I have a lot to say. First off, I spent 2 hours on the phone with Sprint to finally decide it was a software problem. We drove 20+ miles to Best Buy (we're in Little Rock now) and sat there for 2 1/2 hours with the Geek Squad (Sam) and he managed to not only fix my problem, he also cleaned up the files and made my anti-virus work - all under warranty. What a guy. BUT, spending that kind of time in Best Buy was not free. We walked out with a new converter box for the TV and an inverter for the truck - mostly for the computer.
Here's Larry and me playing dominoes. As you can see from my hai
r that the wind is blowing - also note my hand holding down the edge of the tablecloth. Running back to get sat down before the camera goes off was a real challenge for me. Larry's bird, Cuddles, is sitting on the table too getting a breath of fresh air. Trina had Cuddles but decided that her waking up the household early in the morning with her constant chirping was not fun anymore. So Larry took her back while we were in Wichita. Now I'm not happy with her chirping but I probably need to be getting up anyway.
The campground at Lake Ouachita had a really nice hiking trail so we took it one day. Guess what I'm pointing out--I wouldn't let Larry
near it so he took the picture. It was a really pretty trail but I've decided that I need a staff. Every time I wanted to look around I had to stop so I wouldn't loose my balance - a walking staff would have helped with that.
On our last day walking around the camp, I took this picture looking west in the evening. This lake was really beautiful. In the swimming area, Larry stood chest deep in water and could still see his feet. We took the jet ski on Saturday to Lake Hamilton that goes around the south end of Hot Springs (our camp ground was about 20 miles from Hot Springs). Really beautiful homes with gorgeous landscaping - some even had water falls at the edge of the lake. There were so many boats on that lake that we couldn't even find a calm area. We fought boat waves and wind waves the whole time. Most of the boats are pontoon boats. It was a really pretty day - we just should have gone on a week day rather than during the weekend. I didn't get any pictures because I didn't feel like getting out my expensive digital camera while sitting on a jet ski with all those waves coming at me. Unless I'm driving, I mostly see the back of Larry's head--not all that picturesque.
Monday we headed out for David Terry Lock and Dam on the Arkansas River. Long way to drive to camp on a river that runs thru your home town. This is a really pretty camp ground. I took pic
tures of the May Flies before the storm hit. They were so thick that I thought the camper next to us was just plain dirty. Come to find out, he was covered in these flies. Then a big wind (note Larry holding his hat) and some rain came along and I haven't seen a May Fly since. The next morning, I took this picture out our back window. We're actually camped on a back bay area of the river. This area is as wide as the river in Kansas. However, on the other side of
that
line of trees runs the real river. We've been seeing barges coming out from behind that island further south of our camping area. Here, it almost looks like a lake - with a current. There are small craft warning out now so I don't think that we'll get the jet ski in this water. Plus, this water is really, really muddy - sorta like at home--apparently it doesn't clean up. I'll try to get photos of the camp ground tomorrow. We can ride the bikes here too - it's pretty flat here.
Tomorrow we're going into Little Rock to site see - already went in and did laundry, grocery shopping (by the way, they haven't a clue down here about the bags you carry into the grocery store to use instead of plastic - the clerk's comment was "What will they think of next!") and later, drove back into town to fix the computer. We would like to see the tourist areas and find a cool place to eat. Saving the BBQ for Memphis.
